Submissions
The Hythe Review is pleased to open our call for submissions for our second issue which will run from Midday on September 1st and Close at Midday on September 30th.
We welcome poetry, reviews, and essays. Please use this portal to upload your finished work. Register an account (or login if you have an existing account) to begin the submission process.
Please familiarise yourself with our work and ethos before submitting.
All work submitted must adhere to the publisher's guidance on generative AI use; no work should be produced solely using generative AI such as an LLM.
Guidelines:
Poetry
- All work must be typed in a word document using 12pt Times New Roman.
- Authors may submit 1 portfolio of poetry consisting of 3-5 poems with a maximum submission length of 15 pages.
Reviews and Essays
- All work must be submitted in a word document using 12pt Times New Roman. Prose should be double spaced.
- Reviews should be of contemporary books from independent presses only (non-Big 5–Penguin Random House, Harper Collins, Simon & Schuster, Hachette, and Macmillan– and their imprints) which engage the book(s) in question with wider theoretical, literary, and political discourses.
- Essays which cover multiple books or wider cultural, literary, and theoretical trends are welcomed.
- The recommended word count is 3,000 words. Anything significantly outside of this remit can be discussed as a pitch.
- Referencing must be done to scholarly standards using MHRA.
- Completed works are to be submitted directly on this portal. Pitches are also taken and should be sent earlier in the timeframe. These should be sent to kashif@the87press.co.uk
Decision Making:
- Poetry is decided by the editors as part of an open review process.
- Reviews and essays are subject to a double anonymous peer review process.
- Decisions made and authors notified by November. Pitches will be accepted on a rolling basis.
- Publication at the end of January 2027
- Authors whose works are selected for Issue 2 will receive instructions on invoicing for their fee of £100 at publication.

Submission Checklist
Please follow the below checklist before submitting your manuscript to The Hythe Review, ensuring that:
1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it currently under consideration at another journal. If part of the work has been published elsewhere, for instance in a conference proceedings, please clarify the relationship of the current work to the previously published work in the ‘Comments to the Editor’ field.
2. Any third party owned materials used have been identified with appropriate credit lines, and permission obtained from the copyright holder for all formats of the journal. The Hythe Review requires authors to secure any permissions for the reproduction of images as figures within articles that are currently licensed to be reproduced under restrictive terms (e.g., an artist's estate, archive or gallery). Evidence of any granted permissions will need to be shown to the editorial team prior to an article's publication in the journal. Permission to reproduce images must be obtained from the copyright holder prior to submission, and details of the permissions obtained, including a copy of any agreed licensing terms, should be included with your submission. Image permissions should permit open access publication with no restrictions on duration of use or recurring renewal costs. See OLH's guidance on image permissions and reproduction for further information.
3. All authors qualify as authors and have given permission to be listed on the submitted paper, as per the publisher's guidance on authorship.
4. Authors should declare any competing interests when they submit articles to the journal. For information on the publisher’s 'Competing Interests' policy, see the publisher's 'Malpractice Statement'. Information on how to declare a competing interest can be found on the OLH's website.
5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the journal's 'Author Guidelines'. Every effort has been made to ensure that author names are removed from the manuscript (following the instructions to ensure anonymous peer review).
6. Tables are all cited in the main text and are included within the text document.
7. Figures are all cited in the main text and are uploaded as supplementary files. Figures/images have a resolution of at least 150dpi (300dpi or above preferred). The files are in one of the following formats: JPG, TIFF, GIF, PNG, EPS (to maximise quality, the original source file is preferred).
8. The submission adheres to the publisher's guidance on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI), particularly that substantial and known uses of generative AI are declared in an 'AI Declaration Statement' as a section within the manuscript and that this declaration is also given in the online submission process when prompted. Please read OLH's AI Policy for further information on acceptable and unacceptable uses of generative AI, and where and how to make an 'AI Declaration Statement' if this is required.

Authors retain copyright and grant the journal right of first publication with the work simultaneously licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution License that allows others to share the work with an acknowledgement of the work's authorship and initial publication in this journal. If you would prefer to publish your work under an alternative Creative Commons License, please indicate this in the Comments for the Editor box below, providing reasons for your request.
Authors are able to enter into separate, additional contractual arrangements for the non-exclusive distribution of the journal's published version of the work (e.g., post it to an institutional repository or publish it in a book), with an acknowledgement of its initial publication in this journal.
Authors are permitted and encouraged to post their work online (e.g., in institutional repositories or on their website) prior to and during the submission process, as it can lead to productive exchanges, as well as earlier and greater citation of published work (See The Effect of Open Access).
License
This journal recommends that authors retain their copyright via a CC BY 4.0 attribution license. This means that users accessing the work must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. They may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses them or their use of the work. There are no additional restrictions, however the user may not apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the license permits.
While this journal primarily publishes work under the CC BY 4.0 license, there are rare instances where work is published under more restrictive CC licenses or as 'all rights reserved'. Such articles are clearly marked with the appropriate license and/or rights information.
Articles published by the Open Library of Humanities may also contain other CC-licensed material, or material used or reproduced under an exception or limitation to copyright. Such material is not subject to the article's license. It is either marked with its own license, or marked that it has been reproduced with permission or under fair-use.
Peer Review
This journal operates a double anonymous peer review process for critical research submissions, in which two members of the editorial team (numbering five) are responsible for screening and anonymising each submission that is sent to peer reviewers. Reviewers also remain anonymous to the author(s) of the submission for the entire review process.
For creative submissions, the journal operates an open screening and review process with members of the editorial team. The Hythe Review operates robust editorial standards, requiring consensus amongst the entire Editorial Board before accepting a poem or essay for publication. Peer review usually takes 3 months although can, in exceptional cases, take longer. Reviewers are asked to provide formative feedback for articles under consideration for publication in the journal. Creative submissions that are accepted for publication will be provided with editorial feedback but we are unable to provide feedback on submissions that do not make it through to publication.

Publication Fees
There are no publication fees. This journal is published by the Open Library of Humanities (OLH). Unlike many open-access publishers, the OLH does not charge any author fees. This does not mean that we do not have costs. Instead, our costs are paid by an international library consortium.
If your institution is not currently supporting the platform, we request that you ask your librarian to sign up. The OLH is extremely cost effective and is a not-for-profit charity. However, while we cannot function without financial support and we encourage universities to sign up, institutional commitment is not required to publish with us.
Authors who have access to institutional funds or grant funding earmarked for Open Access publication (via a research grant or through their institution's department or library)—and only those authors—are asked if they may use those funds to cover the £450 Voluntary Author Contribution (VAC) of their publication in The Hythe Review. Publication Cycle
The journal publishes biannual issues, with the Spring-Summer Issue and the Autumn-Winter Issue.
